Lottery provides opportunities for our students, sporting activities, prescription drugs for individuals in our community who are challenged financially; we provide for the creation of Art, we assist in providing much needed financial support for our government retirees among many other charitable and enriching opportunities.

We have been in existence for more than 85 years and plan to continue to grow better and stronger every day.

Background

The Virgin Islands Lottery is the oldest continuous lottery in the United States. For the past 85 years the VI Lottery has been an integral part of social fabric of the Virgin Islands community. It was established in 1937 and the first drawing was held on January 25, 1938 at Emancipation Gardens on St. Thomas at noon. From its inception it has been a staple providing relief, employment, and for many the games provide an opportunity to “Making dreams a reality”.

Through the years the Lottery has experienced significant growth and development and has increased its portfolio of games as a value-added measure and as a means of increasing player satisfaction. As a result, the agency has become much more visible and viable and is now a contributor par-excellence to the economy of the Virgin Islands, generating more than 17 million annually.

In fact, the VI Lottery agency is among the top revenue producers for the treasury of the territory. Annually, the VI Lottery (VIL) contributes an average of:

$1.5 million to the Public Schools,
$1 million to the GERS Retirees Bonus Program,
1.5 million to the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program,
$100,000.00 to the office of Veterans Affairs,
$250,000.00 to the Horse Race Commission.
